Deal Highlights Scarcity of Silicon

Written on September 3, 2006

UPI Energy reports
that the silicon supply contract between Germany’s ErSol Solar Energy AG and Wacker Chemie AG puts the spotlight on the main challenge facing the solar industry - the limited amount of high-grade silicon available for production.

The shortage is directly responsible for the high cost of photovoltaic solar energy, which requires subsidies to compete with the relative low cost of fossil fuel generated energy.
