Dow Corning Making Solar-Grade Silicon

Written on September 6, 2006

Optics.org reports
that Dow Corning announced it has developed a method of producing a solar-grade silicon from metallurgical silicon. The new approach creates a silicon product that “exhibits good solar cell performance characteristics when blended with traditional polysilicon feedstock.”

The shortage of high-grade silicon has been an obstacle in the generation of inexpensive solar energy. The new feedstock, Dow Corning PV 1101 SoG Silicon, offers a new source of supply and is the first commercial feedstock currently in large scale manufacturing production.
