South Africa Plans Power Tower
ECOworld reports that South Africa’s Eskom power utility plans to build a 100 MW solar thermal electric generating plant. Using a technique whereby sunlight is concentrated through multiple large mirrors, the plant will create thermal energy to produce steam, which in turn will drive a conventional steam turbine for electricity generation.
The “power tower” design to be employed uses a field of large sun-tracking mirrors that reflect sunlight to a receiver mounted on a central tower in the mirror field.
