Solar Energy Costs Key Focus of Conference
RenewableEnergyAccess.com reports that the U.S. Department of Energy announced a $771 million promotion policy for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources at the PV Industry Forum during the 21st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition. Funds for solar energies technologies will increase from $85 million in 2005 and 2006 to an estimated $148 million in 2007. The DOE hopes that the funding will help to reduce solar energy costs from 5 to 10 cents per kWh by 2015 instead of the projected date of 2020.
The president of the European Photovoltaic Industry Association said that although cost per kilowatt-hour of generated electricity has been cut in half since 1990, solar-generated electricity remains more expensive than electricity generated from sources such as oil, gas and uranium.
