Navy Base at Milestone Using Solar Power
The American Forces Press Service reports that California Naval Base Coronado’s energy conservation efforts reached a major milestone in September when its solar photovoltaic carport registered more than 5 million kilowatt-hours produced. Solar panels cover the roof of the carport, which holds 446 vehicles.
The photovoltaic carport, powered up in October 2002, was projected to generate 1,244,000 KWh per year. The system has performed better than projected, saving the base more than $912,000 in energy costs over that period.
