SunPower Corp.’s climb to the top
The San Francisco Chronicle reports SunPower, a San Jose company that is majority-owned by Cypress Semiconductor Corp., is finally seeing the fruit of a 20-plus year struggle. Last year the company boasted a revenue of $236.5 million, a drastic increase from the $4 million just three years prior. In 1999 SunPower was in dire straights, about to run out of money despite having engineered an innovative new design to make solar cells produce electricity more efficiently. T.J. Rodgers of Cypress Semiconductor kept the company afloat with a personal check for $750,000, a sound investment in a company that manufactures what now has been referred to as “the Mercedes of solar”, and has recently acquired it’s own solar power installation company, PowerLight, in hopes of controlling system costs.
