The Tandem Solar Cell

Written on August 22, 2007

Optics.org reports a research team has developed organic solar cells with a power-conversion efficiency of 6.5%. Alan Heeger of the University of California said, “This is the highest level achieved for solar cells made from organic materials. I am confident that we can make additional improvements that will yield efficiencies sufficiently high for commercial products.”  The device has a tandem design that joins together two multi-layered organic solar cells in series. The arrangement not only produces more voltage but can also enable absorption over a broader range of the solar spectrum than a single cell.
