Can Solar Power The U.S.?

Written on October 22, 2007

Business 2.0 reports David Mills presented a paper at the International solar Energy Society conference held in Beijing. The paper argues that solar farms can replace traditional power plants and produce electricity at competitive prices for the U.S. Mills suggests combining solar thermal plants with energy storage systems. Solar farms would store energy in tanks of liquid that would release heat for night-time operation or on sunless days.  Mills and Robert Morgan have calculated that a 92 by 92-mile solar farm in the southwest could power the entire country.
