Alternative Energy reports five solar companies are sponsoring a 100-day tour to highlight the viability and benefits of solar power. The tour will visit 50 cities and is meant to attract anyone from government officials to community members to utilities companies. Each exhibit is run by solar power.

Market Watch reports Sunrise Solar Corp. has developed a Technology Advisory Board to research and evaluate solar technologies for commercialization. Solar power could account for 69% of the U.S. electrical needs by 2050.

Solar Industry reports Day 4 Energy Inc. has develeoped a manufacturing process for a photovolotaic module with an 18% conversion efficiency rate on multicrystalline silicon materials. This technology will allow for a lower price and the manufacturing process will reduce production costs by 25%.

Energy Current reports Clear Skies Solar will install a photovoltaic solar power system at the McGowen Builders new headquarters in New Jersey. The 122kW project calls for 610 Suntech solar panels and is expected to be finished by the beginning of September. The Renewable Energy Credits provided by the state allowed the McGowen brothers to make this investment in alternative energy.

CNN.com reports Ross Lovegrove has designed a new streetlamp to capture solar rays. The Solar Tree uses 10 branches with solar panels to radiate light on the street. The trees first appeared in Vienna in October 2007 where they provided light for 4 days without any direct sunlight. A new project will resemble a sunflower and move to follow the sun for further optmization.

StreetInsider.com reports Colorado State University will receive a solar electric system that is expected to be operational by the fall of 2008. The 1 MW system is the largest for any educational institute and will provide 10% of the University’s electric needs. BP Solar will install and operate the system, CSU will purchase electricity generated from the solar array from BP.

Greentechmedia.com reports SolFocus has installed 200kW of solar power for the Institute of Concentration Photovoltaic Systems. The second phase of the 500kw system is expected to be complete next month. This is one of the technology’s first commercial projects.

Ithaca Times reports Tompkins County, New York residents have an incentive to install solar power in their homes- it currently has the most solar power systems in the state. The New York State Energy Research & Development Authority has put a local tax exemption into place indefinately. NYSERDA will provide a 40% savings of installation by giving $16,000 back from up front costs.
