SolarIndustryMag.com reports that the Clean Energy Promotion Act was introduced earlier this month. The new legislation was brought to the forefront by Rep. Martin Heinrich and it aims to promote “green” projects on public lands.

Wyoming Business Report reports the Bureau of Land Management is establishing renewable energy offices to expedite projects in the area of solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass power.  The Renewable Energy Coordination Offices will be located in those states that are advanced in renewable energy facilities - Arizona, California, Nevada, and Wyoming.

Obama Urges Congress to Act Quickly

CNNMoney.com reports Obama has called on Congress to act quickly for his proposed American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan.  he has also proposed to double alternative energy by investing in solar panels and wind turbines.

The Sunshine State to Receive Two Solar Power Plants

iStockAnalyst reports SunPower has been chosen by Florida Power and Light to build two solar power plants in Florida.  A 25MW facility will be built in DeSoto County and a 10MW facility will be built for the Kennedy Space Center.  These plants are being built because the legislature has allowed FPL to recover full costs if they generate 110 MW of solar power electricity.  They are expected to be operational by 2009 and 2010.

Solar Energy Industry Association Introduces Alternative Plans to Extend Tax Incentives

Greentechmedia reports the Solar Energy Industry Association has created a plan to save the U.S. market and tax incentives from expiring at the end of this year.  The association has proposed the following contingency plans:

  • Request another vote to extend the 30% commercial investment tax credit by 8 years, the residential investment tax credit by 6 years, and raise the cap on residential credits from $2,000 to $4,000.
  • To introduce the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Act of 2008 to the House of Representatives for same provisions previously listed.
  • Association is looking to get another extension included in the federal budget.
  • Association is looking for a multi-year extension of the Economic Stimulus package to include a one year extension of tax incentives and lift the $2,000 cap on residential credits all together.

If everything else fails:

  • The association is looking to get another bill introduced to extend current incentives for another 1-2 years.

Expiring Tax Credit May Endanger Renewable Energy Industry

Reuters reports the clean energy industry could be stunted if Congress decides not to extend tax incentives that are set to expire next year. Democrats dropped a $21.5 billion package of tax incentives from an energy bill after Republicans threatened to block it. Without the tax credits homeowners and businesses may be hesitant to invest in the new technologies.

ajc.com reports on the major effort launched by the solar energy industry to persuade Congress to extend tax breaks and other incentives that are critical in keeping the industry’s recent momentum going. The solar industry wants Congress to extend the tax breaks that were initially passed in 2005 to give consumers and income tax credit equal to 30% of the cost of the system.

Ohio Poised To Improve Energy Standing

The Cincinnati Post reports on Ohio being poised to join the renewable energy trend started by more than 20 other states. Broad energy measures to be introduced to the State Legislature this fall will include requirements that power companies provide certain percentages of electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar. Now that the U.S. Senate is considering a national renewable standard, Ohio officials say the state can’t afford to fall further behind.

Southbendtribune.com reports on Rep. Joe Donnelly’s belief in the benefits of alternative energy sources. Donnelly said in an interview that becoming energy independent is a matter of national security as much as it is an environmental issue. The Granger Democrat is enthusiastic about the possibility of bringing the production of a new kind of photovoltaic cell to South Bend.

Greater Boston Area Using Green Power

DiGiTAL50.com reports SatCon Technology Corporation says it’s power conditioning units for a 425 KW photovoltaic solar energy system has been providing green energy since it’s dedication on October 26, 2006. The system, located in Brockton, Massachusetts, generates an estimated 535 megawatt hours of electricity annually. The city plans to eventually increase the Brockton system’s capacity to 1 Megawatt.
