Red Orbit reports MPX Energia of Brazil and China’s Yingli Green Energy Holding Company have plans to build a 50 MW solar power plant in Brazil.

Chile Considers Solar Plants for the Desert

Bloomberg.com reports the President of Chile has announced increased spending on energy sources.  The country is currently encouraging hydroelectric power development and is considering solar power plants to be built in the desert.  The purpose for these investments is to end shortages that are threatening the country’s economic growth.

Energy Current reports MPX Energia SA signed a memorandum of understanding with Baoding Tianwei Yengli New Energy Resources Co. LTD to develop a potential partnership in solar power projects.  They are looking at opportunities in photovoltaic  power plants in Brazil and Latin America and a photovoltaic module manufacturing facility in Brazil to supply the plants.

SolarChill Fridge Wins Award

Greenpeace International reports that SolarChill, a refrigeration technology using solar power that enables the delivery of vaccines and food to regions of the world without electricity has won the Environmental Pioneer in Refrigeration award in the 2006 Cooling Industry Awards.

The SolarChill not only operates on solar energy; it uses environmentally safe refrigerants; bypasses the use of lead batteries; and can also be plugged into the grid if necessary. SolarChill has been field tested in Senegal, Indonesia, and Cuba.
